Support for non-English folder name

Postby darren » Fri Jun 26, 2009 1:35 pm

Been using v3 for a while and thought to give v4 a try, but apparently AWC still doesn't support non-English folder names (failed to query/find any pictures).

Would be very great if AWC can do that - basic expectation from an windows application nowadays

Apart from this, I want to say thanks for this great application :)

Can you give me an example of a non-English folder name? What languages are we talking about here?

thanks for responding to this, Steve.

Ie some of the asian languages - japanese, mandarin, korean.
Although I'm using the english version of windows XP, i have no problems naming the folders in other languages.

01.jpg - some example folders I setup in different languages - Russian, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit, Tamil, Czech, Japanese, Korean, Simplified/Traditioanl Chinese
02.jpg - how other application (or the standard windows xp file dialog) can access it and the files in it.
03.jpg - how AWC see it (everything non-english is replaced with zeros)

Not sure if you need to config windows for this, but I surely dont use Sanskrit/Tamil/Russian... but it still works for me.
It might be the programming language/code base that you use to build AWC, it needs to be able to support for Unicode ?

Hi Darren,

This looks to be a big job I'm afraid so it probably won't happen soon. I'll revisit it in the future though.

Расвет. Панорама. Вид на Карадаг и мыс Хамелион с побережья Коктебельского залив.jpg

Seems this file name also throws AWC for a loop.

Hi,
About this problem there is a simple way to deal with it.
This software can read subdirectories, so just put the non-English folder in a English.

Thanks for helping out ylinky but that didn't work for me. Interestingly the file name described doesn't just cause errors in AWC but in Irfanview and GIMP too. I suspect I'll have to make suitable modifications to make the software truly international to solve the problem but, as I said above, that is such a big job it is unlikely to happen in the near future.
